Percussion World - History

Detroit Symphony percussionists Norm Ficket, and Sam Tundo founded Percussion World in 1976. Setting up shop in Birmingham, Michigan, the two began developing an education, instrument sales, and repair business unique to the metropolitan Detroit area.

Norm and Sam swiftly earned a reputation as knowledgeable professionals, operating a store, which catered to seasoned players and beginners alike. Service, specialty products, and an elite private teaching staff were then, and have remained staples of the business.

An unusually large customer base had already been established when in 1984, the pair up-rooted and moved the store to its' current location in Ferndale. Greater visibility, and proximity to the city

of Detroit were immediate attributes to an increase in business, and Percussion World began expanding its' product lines and teaching operation to meet the new demand.

The following year however, Norm and Sam decided to retire from retail instrument sales, and the store was sold to charismatic, world-class trombonist, Ron Kischuk.

While seemingly an odd fit, it was indeed Kischuk's peerless people skills, and shrewd business sense, which ultimately navigated Percussion World through two successful decades in an ever changing, competitive marketplace.

During those twenty years, increasing performance, recording, and teaching demands limited Ron's time for the business, and alas prompted his decision to sell it. On July 1st, 2005, Percussion World again changed ownership.

Contributing anew to this legacy, current owners Mike Abbate, and Mike Racette have brought keen focus, hands-on commitment, and an ardent sense of customer service. Their enthusiasm for the instrument both as experienced players and product specialists has revitalized what many consider to be a beacon in the drumming community.

As Percussion World heads into its' fourth decade, it does so with a passion for expanding products and services, while maintaining an unswerving devotion to customer satisfaction. A refreshing attitude, which vigorously suggests that integrity and business aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

Welcome to a new era, and thank you for your support.
